About Natural Gas | Deregulation of the Gas Industry

Reform of the Natural Gas industry is being driven by the Commonwealth Government's commitment to introduce competition into the industry to provide customers with choice as to their gas retailer. This is known as contestability.

Just like electricity, if you have natural gas supplied to your home or business, you can now choose to buy gas from a range of energy retailers.

Some energy retailers sell both gas and electricity while other specialise in just gas, or just electricity. You can buy gas from one retailer and electricity from another, or you can buy your gas and electricity from the same retailer. It's your choice.

If you don't want to do anything, you don't have to. You will continue to be billed from your existing gas retailer and your supply won't be affected at all.

If you buy gas from a new retailer you will not have to change your meter and the safety, quality and reliability of your supply won't be affected.

Information on market segment contestability can be found at the Energy Networks Association website www.ena.asn.au.

All states now allow customers to choose their gas retailer.
