Emergency Information
The Natural Gas Industry in Australia has many controls and standards in place to ensure your safety.
Natural Gas is lighter than air, causing it to dissipate quickly into the atmosphere should leakage occur. However, all gas leaks should be reported as gas may build up in confined spaces creating a potentially dangerous situation.
What to do if you smell gas
If you smell gas in the street or on your property before or including the meter, you should call your state Gas Leaks and Emergency Number (as listed), to locate and repair the leak.If however, you believe the leak to be after the meter on a section of pipe work connecting your appliances, or on the appliance itself, you should contact a licensed gasfitter to rectify the problem. Remember, any person undertaking work involving gas must be appropriately licensed.

1. Turn OFF all appliances and pilot lights
2. Turn OFF supply at the gas meter.
3. Open all doors and windows for ventilation.
4. Contact your licensed gasfitter to repair the escape and relight appliances.
Remember
- Do not look for a gas leak with a naked flame or other ignition source.
- Do not operate electrical equipment in the vicinity of a gas leak.
Natural Gas and Bushfires
When a bushfire approaches, whether you decide to leave your home or stay, you should always turn off the natural gas supply.
The valve to turn off the natural gas supply is located on the side of the gas meter assembly and is a quarter turn valve.
Remember to keep the area around the gas meter obstruction free and clear of any combustible materials.
How to turn off your gas supply
- Turn off all gas appliances in your home, including gas cooking appliances, heaters and hot water unit (including the pilot).
- Locate your gas meter. The gas meter is usually located in a metal box on the side of your house (commonly opposite side to the driveway), or in your front garden.
- Turn the gas meter off by rotating the valve 90 degrees to the horizontal off position. The meter is off when the handle is at right angles to the pipe.
If you do not know where your meter and service valve is on your property, contact your gas retailer.
After a Bushfire
If your home is affected by a bushfire, do not turn on the gas supply without first engaging a gasfitter to test and confirm there are no gas leaks or damage to your outlet service gas piping and/or gas appliances.
